General Use

These are made to prevent minor damage to the hands. So if you do not want rough hands then wear a pair of general purpose gloves.
Generally the wrist and lower arms are not protected.
Water and damp can still get through.

Pruning

If dealing with prickly thorns like roses etc. then you need thorn-proof gloves. Generally these have the palms protected highly and have a heavy duty back.

Chemicals

Always read the label to determine the correct safety equipment to use

Ponds

There is nothing worse than just trying to reach that bit further into the water and whoosh your waterproof glove fills with water.
To avoid the above you maybe interested in long arm gloves. The gloves are extended right up to to the shoulder.

Allergic Reactions

I can only speak for myself on this one. I use surgical gloves to protect my hands.

Oil and Paraffin

Surgical gloves are what motor mechanics use, so I use them also. Dish washing gloves do not allow the same dexterity when handling small parts.

Cat and Dog litter

Ever tried to shovel cat or dog litter off the lawn, then try the method below. Not for the queasy stomach ones though.

A plastic carry bag serves me well. Single use and touch wood never had a problem so far. Put your hand inside and grab the offending substance then with the other turn the bag inside out. The litter is now inside waiting to be disposed of.
